Highlighting culture and heritage.

The Elami typeface is inspired by the warmth, creativity, and resilience of my Abuela, Elsa “Elami” Alvarez, an Ecuadorian artist and maker who worked hard every single day and built a life with her own hands. Drawing from the sturdy clay roof tiles (tejas) that shelter homes and families across Ecuador, this chunky, slightly rounded typeface embodies a sense of strength, tradition, and handcrafted charm. Just as each teja is shaped with care and built to last, this bilingual typeface celebrates craftsmanship, family heritage, and the bold yet inviting spirit of Ecuadorian artistry. Elami also reflects the journey of my family; of immigration, adaptation, and the blending of cultures while holding onto the roots that shaped us. It is a tribute to the sacrifices made by many, the stories carried across borders, and the way home is built wherever family is.
